The latest Strategy Analytics survey reveals that more than one in five Americans want an Apple smartphone this year.

Of the 2,285 consumers polled, 23.5 per cent of respondents said that they were either somewhat or very likely to buy an iPhone before the end of the year, putting the device in the number one spot, followed by an Android smartphone (21.6%), a portable PC (17.4%) and an iPad (15.3%).

"Americans show no signs of falling out of love with the iPhone," says Jia Wu, Director, Connected Home Devices. "

But interest in Android smartphones as well as other personal computing devices remains strong, highlighting the leading role of these smart technologies in today's technology lifestyles."

Data released Monday from Kantar Worldpanel shows that while the US has officially reached the 50 per cent tipping point for smartphone ownership, the appetite for new handsets, particularly those from Apple, shows no signs of diminishing.

Demand for the iPhone 4, 4S and iPhone 5 over the last quarter drove Apple's share of the US smartphone market up to 53.3 percent.

The figures also reveal that 40 per cent of iPhone buyers over the last quarter were new smartphone customers and that 27 per cent of buyers were moving from another smartphone platform.
