Muslims observing fast during Ramadan should practise the three key principals of variety, balance, and moderation in their meal during iftar.

Tropicana Medical Centre dietitian Tan Yen Sing also encouraged those fasting to cultivate the habit of eating slowly.

"When you break fast after fasting for 12 hours, you have to do it slowly. You should start with something high in energy such as eating two or three dates - which is known to be high in iron. It gives you an instant energy boost after fasting.

“This is followed by drinking a cup of warm water first. Then rest a bit, continue with your prayers and start your portion plate concept by eating a well-balanced meal,” she said during an interview with Astro AWANI.

According to Tan, the portion plate concept is divided into several components such as high fiber, (vegetables), carbohydrate (bread or rice), proteins (meat, poultry and egg), a piece of fruit and milk.

The portion plate concept could be applied not only for iftar, but also for sahur.

Tan also acknowledged the abundance of food and drinks at the bazaars but advised people not to over-indulge.

“Some are sweet like "air sirap" and "air bandung". Then, there is a lot of deep fried food. You have to be careful with the food selection,” she said.
