Those representing the government and the opposition took the opportunity to congratulate and wish 'Happy International Women's Day' when debating the motion of thanks for the royal address, in addition to recognising and supporting women's role and contributions in the development of the world community.

Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun, hoped the contribution of women in the political, economic, social and religious spheres continued to be given the recognition it deserves.

Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah (BN-Lenggong) said the role of women in promoting gender equality should be emphasised to ensure there was balance between men and women, thus helping in the development of the country.

Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PKR-Permatang Pauh) who is also PKR president, described women as the perfect gift that needed to be protected and not be manipulated to fit the interests of any party.

Loke Siew Fook (DAP-Seremban) said the contribution of women deserved recognition and he called on the government to give women a greater role to play to ensure their rights were heard and protected.

The Dewan Rakyat will sit for 20 days until April 6 before the focus shifts to the Dewan Negara for 10 days from April 17 to 27. -- BERNAMA
