Security in India’s capital has been intensified after news of the brutal rape victim’s death at the Singapore hospital early Saturday morning.

Indian media reported India Gate, where a big protest against the gruesome act on the student took place last weekend, which turned violent and resulted in one death, is heavily barricaded.

The national monument, located in the heart of the city, has been cordoned off. Tourists were also not allowed to be in the area.

The 23-year old student who was brutally gang raped by six men suffered multiple organ failure. Her body is expected to be flown back to India.

Small groups of protesters were still seen at various places in the capital voicing their anger against the rape and violent against women. Some were determined to continue the protest until the perpetrators are hanged.

An attempt to march to India Gate on Thursday was thwarted by heavy police presence with tear gas, water cannon and batons.

Delhi is often referred to as the rape capital of India with the highest number of rape cases reported. To-date 661 cases had been recorded, an increase of 17 per cent from 2011. On average there is one rape case recorded every 18 hours.

The protest is an accumulated anger and anguish of violence against women in India as police is often seen either slow in taking action or no action at all.

On Thursday, it was reported that an 18-year-old girl committed suicide 44 days after she was allegedly gang-raped. Reports said that police failed to act against her perpetrators.
