BUKIT JALIL: The ongoing commitment by Astro AWANI in disseminating information on environment sustainability should be a model for other players in the industry.

United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Executive Director Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the initiatives by the station are much appreciated.

"What is carried out by Astro AWANI is commendable as it extends beyond just a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The station has invested into the sustainability of our environment.

"I believe this should be followed by the rest of the corporate players in the industry," said Maimunah during her visit to Astro All Asia Broadcast Centre here today.

The visit is part of her official trip to the Asian region.

Her arrival to the centre was welcomed by Astro AWANI's Editor-in-Chief Ashwad Ismail and senior members of the Editorial team.

Astro AWANI and UN-Habitat also formed a strategic partnership with regards to environment, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) as well as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The cooperation was fostered as a response to meet the current needs involving urban sustainability, smart cities and the future of urbanisation.

In the visit, Maimunah also spent some time to be interviewed for both the Agenda AWANI and AWANI Tonight programmes.

Maimunah was appointed to her current position on 22nd January 2018 replacing her predecessor Dr Joan Clos from Spain.

The Negeri Sembilan-born Maimunah was once the Penang mayor and was the first woman to be appointed to lead a Municipal Council when she was made the Yang Dipertua of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council in 2011.
