The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) have stepped up security control and moved its assets towards national borders and territorial waters, particularly in Sabah, following bomb attacks in neighbouring countries, namely Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said an additional two patrol vessels would be deployed today, to beef up security in Sabah waters.
"The armed forces have also stationed its Quick Reaction Force (QRF) members with other troops operating in the islands off Sabah and will increase patrols by combat boats in the areas identified as the route (to enter Sabah) from the southern Philippines," he said in a statement here today.
Hishammuddin, who is also Minister with Special Functions, said the ATM would add another infantry company of the Malaysian Army in Cenderawasih, Lahad Datu, Sabah.
"The additional troop is to ensure that the coastal areas of Lahad Datu are fully manned...this includes moving additional assets that have the ability to counter and respond quickly on any threat," he added.
Hishammuddin said he had contacted his fellow counterparts from neighbouring countries, namely Delfin Negrillo Lorenzana (the Philippines), Prawit Wongsuwan (Thailand) and Ryamizard Ryacudu (Indonesia) for the latest development over the bombing incidents in their countries.
"The ATM will continue to work closely with the armed forces of the three countries to strengthen security control in the respective nations, including sharing information on intelligence."
In addition, Hishammuddin said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had instructed the ATM to work with security authorities in the country to ensure the sovereignty and security of Sabah were maintained.
"With the ever challenging world security landscape, ATM and other authorities in the country will always find ways and the best methods from time to time to overcome these threats.
"We will not bow to any quarters or groups which trying to destabilise the security and sovereignty of the country," he added.
