Local publisher, Buku Fixi, won the main award at the International London Book Festival on Tuesday, the first day of the festival.

The company, which began operations three years ago, won The Bookseller International Adult Trade Publisher Award.

“Fixi has gained a strong reputation in the three years since its inception by snapping up top authors for its translation list,” stated the press release issued by the festival’s organiser.

Fixi was founded by Amir Muhammad and it gives focus on urban contemporary novels. Several of its publications have been adapted for the screen such as Pecah and KL Zombi.

"The award doesn’t mean we’ve done great. It means we’ve got great potential. Syukur!", said Amir on his Facebook page.

Aside from novels, the company also publishes books in English under the label Fixi Novo, and ‘old’ books under Fixi Retro.

Last year, it published translated versions of popular international literary works under the label Fixi Verso. The two novels are Joyland by Stephen King and The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman.

“Throughout the preparations for the London Book Festival, my team and I have been lucky because we had the opportunity to meet with many individuals who have inspired us and we have learned about the amazing initiatives by publishers from around the world.

“It’s wonderful to be able to celebrate the best international talent at our awards. From new companies like Fixi in Malaysia to publishing stalwarts like renowned Danish agent, Anneli Ha [winner of the International Literary Agent award], the winners provide a fascinating showcase for international publishing,” said London Book Festival director, Jacks Thomas.

The list of award winners reflects the international standard and the recognition it gives to publishers around the world such as from Belorussia, Pakistan, India, Denmark, Australia, the United States and China.

The awards is recognition from the United Kingdom to international publishers and individuals that have been involved in the book industry and it excludes publishers from the UK in it’s main category.

The United States lead the list of winners winning three categories. “Around the world, publishers are innovating and developing new ideas of how and what publishing could and will look like in the future and these awards are a great opportunity to demonstrate our success as an industry,” said CEO of the UK's Publishers Association, Richard Mollet.

The festival also awarded the London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award to Deborah Rogers of Rogers, Coleridge and White, who was responsible for publishing works by Salman Rushdie, Philip Roth, Peter Carey, Kazuo Ishiguro and Hanif Kureishi.
