More and more flood victims in Terengganu were forced to flee their homes and seek shelter at relief centres as the flood situation worsened tonight.

Flood victims currently taking shelter at relief centres across the state numbered 14,643 people, compared to 12,460 in the afternoon.

According to the National Security Council's portal, the number of flood victims registered in Dungun showed a steep rise to 2,789 (701 families) from only 317 people (77 families) in the afternoon.

In Kemaman, the number of victims also increased to 10,894 (2,487 families) from 10,849 (2,476 families) previously.

In Hulu Terengganu, the number of victims taking shelter at relief centres had also risen to 790 people (245 families), while in Marang, 21 people (four families).

Meanwhile, Setiu was hit by the second wave of floods and 149 people from 43 families in three villages were evacuated to relief centre earlier tonight.

Three new relief centres had been opened to accommodate the increasing number of victims, namely in the surau of Kampung Bukit Nyior, the mosque in Kampung Merbau Menyusut and the surau in Kampung Tok Nandong.

As at 9 pm, 17 relief centres remained open in Dungun, Hulu Terengganu (20), Kemaman (31), Marang (two) and Setiu (three).

In PAHANG, the flood situation had improved with the total number of flood victims taking shelter at relief centres tonight had declined to 6,048 from 7,582 recorded in the afternoon.

According to the Pahang police flood operations room spokesman, as at 8 pm, there were 1,473 families in 88 relief centres across the eight districts hit by floods.

"Pekan still recorded the highest number of flood evacuees at 3,273 in 37 relief centres," he told Bernama.

In Kuantan, 1,082 flood evacuees were still taking shelter at eight relief centres, Maran (727 victims in 14 centres), Temerloh (555 victims in 14 centres), Bera (305 victims in seven centres), Jerantut (57 victims in five centres), Rompin (33 victims in two centres) and Lipis (16 victims in one centre).

The road at Km14 Jalan Temerloh-Triang, however, was still closed to all traffic.

In JOHOR, the number of flood victims at relief centres remained at 266 from 63 families as at 9 pm.

Of the total, 28 were taking shelter at Sekolah Kebangsaan Spang Loi, Balai Raya Gemereh IV (66), Pogoh 2 community hall (45), Sekolah Agama Kampung Kuala Paya (26), Kampung Tandong community hall (85) and Kampung Sanglang community hall (16).

They could not return home as their houses were still submerged in stagnant flood water.
