Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak received a courtesy call from Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Ismail Omar at the Prime Minister's Office, here Tuesday.

The meeting, lasting almost half-an-hour, was held following Ismail's mandatory retirement on Friday.

Ismail, who was born on May 17, 1953 in Kulim, Kedah, was appointed as the ninth IGP on Sept 13, 2010 to succeed Tan Sri Musa Hassan.

Meanwile, Ismail thanked the prime minister for giving the chance to helm the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for more than two years.

He said the meeting also discussed efforts to enhance the services provided by the PDRM besides sharing views with the prime minister on national security matters which were becoming more challenging.

"We concurred that there would certainly be challenges to national security in future and the PDRM must continue to provide improved security to the public and country," he told reporters after the meeting with Najib.

Meanwhile, commenting on the rallies held by the opposition to protest the outcome of the 13th general election (GE13), Ismail said that street demonstrations should not be made as a lifestyle for the people in the country.

"Our democratic practice has been in place for more than 50 years, the system have been implemented and valid platforms have been set up, why should we belittle them? Making wild accusations at the police force, these are not noble and positive traits.

"They are the ones who continue to break the provisions of the law and we will be firm. We know what to do, just wait. We have our work style and strategy," he added.
