Police arrested an immigration officer at his office here yesterday in connection with the case where a Thai woman claimed that she was raped at the Machap Umboo Immigration Depot earlier this month.

Melaka deputy police chief, Datuk Ruslan Hasan said police picked up the 31-year-old suspect at the Melaka Immigration Office here at 5.30pm.

"We will be applying for a remand order against him. The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code," he told reporters here today.

Earlier he had attended the state-level 210th Police Day celebration at the Melaka police headquarters.

The 32-year woman had claimed that an immigration officer at the depot had raped her when recording her statement.

In other matters, Ruslan said police had identified the key suspect in the slaying of Chia Chun Kit, 21, who was found dead in a pool of blood at a restaurant in Taman Kerjasama, Bukit Beruang here on March 8.

He said the suspect, a Myanmar man, was believed to be hiding in Kuala Lumpur and that two other Myanmar men arrested in connection with the case had been released on police bail.
