Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has contacted the next-of-kin of the passengers of flight MH370 who have been missing since March 8, to start disseminating compensation.

In a media statement, MAS said this move was intended to help some of the next-of-kin and family members of the passengers.

"It will not affect their right to make a compensation claim in the future and it will be calculated in the final damages later," the national carrier said.

On the matter of damages, MAS said it is something that will remain in the strictest confidence and the details will not be discussed openly to respect the interests of the beneficiaries and family members of the passengers.

A statement by MAS on the compensation amount was posted on the hall door of Hotel Lido on Friday, and compensation will be payable to eligible individuals to cover the immediate financial need.
