An Iranian mother and her daughter were detained after Customs officers seized two package of syabu worth RM1.28 million from their luggage at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on last Friday.

Both suspects, aged 46 and 25, were arrested after they were just arrived from Tehran after made several transit stop at Abu Dhabi, Lahore and Bangkok.

KLIA Customs director, Badaruddin Mohamed Rafik said the arrest was made at 9.15pm as the duo were attempted to pass by the Customs checkpoint.

“They were acting suspiciously and trying to avoid being check but our officer managed to detect. When they approached the duo and checked their luggages, Customs were shocked to find two big packages that was stashed underneath an altered compartment of the luggages,” said Badaruddin.

Initial investigation found that both suspects were operating a beauty shop in Iran and have travelled three times to Malaysia since 2011.

Both of them have been remanded for seven days for investigation under Section 39B of Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which carries death penalty.

Meanwhile, between early January and February 20 this year, Customs officers have busted nine cases of attempted drug smuggling to this country in KLIA which involved the seizure of drugs worth RM8.2 million.

Eight drug mules – each four men and women were detained involving three Iranians, two Indonesians and each one from Thailand, India and Nigeria.

The biggest haul was made in the middle of January when Customs managed to seized syabu weight 9.25kg.
