A Year Two schoolgirl who was bitten by a snake during physical education at the school field yesterday is in stable condition, according to the Negeri Sembilan Education Department.

Its director, Rusni Ab Jalil, said the pupil of Sekolah Kebangsaan Chembong here was being closely monitored at the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital.

The girl's mother had informed her that the girl's health was improving and she could eat and drink, she told reporters here today.

Rusni said the school field was well maintained and not overgrown with vegetation.

She said the department had disseminated relevant information on the safety of schoolchildren to teachers and principals following the incident.

Rusni said she had asked the school to provide counselling to the girl after she returned to school.

This is the second incident in the country this week of a snake attack in schools.

Last Tuesday, a Year One schoolgirl of Sekolah Kebangsaan Dato' Hisham 1, Pengkalan Chepa, in Kelantan died after she was bitten during recess by what is believed to be a snake.
