Selangor recorded 825 cases of child abuse in the first six months of this year, the state legislative assembly was told Thursday.

State Health, Welfare, Women and Family Affairs Committee chairman, Dr Daroyah Alwi said the Petaling district had the highest number of such cases at 154, followed by Subang Jaya (63) and Shah Alam (57).

"Family dispute is the main factor that leads to child abuse... there are parents who abuse children because of domestic crisis," she said when replying to a supplementary question from Haniza Mohamed Talha (PAS-Taman Medan) on the issue of child abuse in the state.

Dr Daroyah (PKR-Sementa) asked the state government to implement various awareness activities and programmes with relevant agencies such as the Social Welfare Department to educate the people so as to check the problem.

Motivational programmes and workshops would also be held for parents in a move to reduce cases of child abuse, she said.
