The MIC has targeted to register 90,000 out of its total 570,000-odd members as voters by June 15, in preparation for the coming 14th General Election, says its president, Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.

He said the party branch chairmen had been given the Key Performance Index (KPI) to conduct the exercise to ensure the MIC had the necessary numbers to deliver Indian votes to the Barisan Nasional.

"Apart from registering MIC members , we will also identify Indians who are not voters and register them as voters.

"The voter registration exercise will emphasise on constituencies where the MIC is contesting," he told a press conference after officiating a voter registration exercise organised by the Klang MIC division here today.

Dr Subramaniam, who is also Health Minister said the Indian community must realise the importance of becoming a voter as many of their rights, whether in education, social, religion or economy depended on effective and strong political representation.

"They must ensure they give strength to the party so that there will be effective representation to safeguard their rights," he said, adding the Indian voter base in the country had increased from 900,000 to a million. - BERNAMA
