Motorcycle taxi drivers have modified their vehicles to keep passengers dry and high above the floodwaters.

Malaysia is emulating developed countries which do not use motorcycle taxi services to ensure the safety of road users, says Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi.

The Cabinet had left it to the ministry to decide on the matter and to explain to the public why the service had to cease.

Three motorcycle owners were issued summonses by the Road Transport Department (RTD) yesterday for providing unauthorised motorcycle taxi service known as 'Dego Ride'.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said, however, the operator should be prepared to face legal action for operating without a license.

"The Road Transport Department and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) will launch undercover operations to arrest those who offer Dego Ride services.

Despite an order it cease operations with immediate effect as announced yesterday, the Dego Ride motorcycle taxi service appears to be still available here today.

The Transport Ministry has ordered the Dego Ride or motorcycle taxi service to stop immediately because of safety factors.
