The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) has no power to determine the rise or fall of fish prices following the impact of the El Nino phenomenon.

Its minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said his ministry's function on the contrary is to see, in terms of consumer acceptance, on whether the price should rise or fall.

"The ministry only has the power to determine the price of two essential items that is sugar and flour under the Price Control and the Anti-Profiteering Act 2011," he told reporters after presenting the 2015 excellent service awards to 265 ministry staff here today.

"Many do not know that the ministry's power is limited," he said, adding that the rise or fall of fish price was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry.

In another development, Hamzah assured that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would not be increased even though global crude oil prices had dropped.
