WASHINGTON: Marvel Studios fired US actor Jonathan Majors, who played the villainous character Kang the Conqueror, after a court found him guilty of assault and harassment against his former girlfriend, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to Sputnik.

"We will not be moving forward with Jonathan Majors," the source said on Monday.

No additional information is available on the matter, the source added.

Earlier in the day, a New York court convicted Majors, 34, of one count of reckless assault in the third degree and a non-criminal charge of harassment as a violation against his girlfriend in a domestic dispute.

Majors played the character Kang the Conqueror in the third installment of Marvel Studios' Ant-Man movies and was set to play a major role in several more projects planned for the coming years, including in a new Avengers movie. Majors also played variants of Kang the Conqueror in seasons one and two of Marvel Studios' Loki series.

Media reported that US Judge Michael Gaffey set a sentencing date for Majors on Feb 6 and he faces up to one year in jail.
