Neill Blomkamp appears to be the favourite to take the director's role for the pilot episode of a new TV series based on "Halo."

Microsoft's Xbox hit may be 13 years old this year, but it's spawned an eight-game franchise with another huge announcement due this year.

As for Blomkamp, he was at one time due to steer a "Halo" movie -- though that was back in 2007.

Now the Latino Review indicates that the Steven Spielberg-produced series has managed to get Blomkamp back on board, even after he said "I love the world of Halo; I don't think I would go back there" in 2009.

But at the same time, Blomkamp is familiar with the "Halo" fiction and was in charge of three "Halo 3" live action shorts, working directly with Microsoft, as he would be for the TV adaptation.

Microsoft had announced its TV series plans in June 2013, as part of a brand expansion that would see the new Xbox One become a central part of family room entertainment, used for streaming music, movies and TV programs just as much as playing games.
