An armed robbery attempt by a group of four men at Mentari Court, Sungai Way here, last night proved costly when one of them shot an accomplice while struggling with the victim.
Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Azmi Abu Kassim said in the 7.48 pm incident, the victim, who was walking to the parking lot at the apartment was approached by the four local suspects in a Perodua Viva.
One of the suspects in the car demanded the victim to surrender his rucksack and ring by pointing a gun at his stomach.
The victim did not want to give in, and instead tried to grab the gun, after which a tug of war ensued that resulted in a shot being fired, hitting another suspect as he got out of the car to help his friend, said Azmi when contacted here today.
He said the suspect who was shot wounded his right thigh, while the other three men fled the scene.
"Police rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call from the victim, and arrested the injured suspect," he said, adding that the 22-year-old man was a drug addict and had served a jail term before.
However, the other three suspects managed to run away with the victim's ring worth RM2,000.
"The police also seized a pistol, three bullets, one bullet shell, and two mobile phones from the suspect.
"The suspect is being treated at University Malaya Medical Centre and the police are tracking down the other three," he said.
Azmi said the case was being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties Act) 1971.
