Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharum today offered to contest for the Jerai Umno division chief post in the party elections next month.

Jamil Khir, who also offered to contest for a seat in the Umno Supreme Council, said the decision was made in an effort to strengthen the division and Umno for the next general election.

"I see the need for continuity as Jerai MP to head Umno in this constituency, in terms of channeling funds and efforts to strengthen the party especially in this constituency.

"We're confident that when we arrange the party's strategy from now we can strengthen Umno's position for victory in the next general election," he told reporters when having breakfast with villagers of Kampung Dato' Abdullah, Sungai Limau, near here.

The post of Jerai Umno division chief is now held by Datuk Shuhaimi Abdullah.

Jamil Khir said should he be chosen for the post, he had his own agenda to develop human capital in the Umno division and would make Umno a party which championed human capital issues.

On his wish to contest for the Supreme Council post, Jamil Khir said he wanted to represent the party in religious matters as well as maintain his post as Umno Religious Bureau chairman.

Meanwhile, in KUALA LUMPUR, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said he would not be contesting for any post in the party elections next month.

"I am from the business and corporate sector. I have no intention of becoming a politician and don't see any probability of me joining politics in the future," he told Bernama here yesterday.

Abdul Wahid, 49, previously a corporate figure who headed several giant companies, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had asked him to join the government administration to give perspective on managing the national economy.
