KUALA LUMPUR: Journalists play an important role in disseminating information and shaping society, says Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (K-KOMM) secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek.

He said, therefore, reporting on a matter should be accurate because the community evaluated news based on reliability, proper analysis and the ability of journalists to convey the news clearly.

"The role of the journalist is important because it shapes the current situation...if the report is negative then it will be negative or chaotic," he said when appearing as a guest on the 'Bicara Naratif' programme broadcast by RTM, last night.

Commenting on the challenges faced by journalism with the existence of social media, Mohammad said the style of reporting or the creativity of the presentation in disseminating information was very important for journalists or media organisations to remain relevant.

"This is a challenge for journalists ... now there are a lot of options on social media so there is a lot of information because it (social media) is 'borderless' so we can't block something because the platforms are so vast," he said, adding that he felt journalists were carrying out their duties professionally despite the tough social and political climates.

On the openness of journalists in reporting news, he said Malaysia had given them the freedom, but it was necessary to follow the set code of ethics.

"For example, the reporting must be authentic from an authentic source and not a rumor. Not to sensationalise something and end up triggering something negative and invite trouble," he said.

Touching on the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2022 on Sunday, he said the celebration recognised media practitioners including cameramen, publishers, authors and all parties involved in news delivery.

HAWANA 2022, which will take place in Melaka, is being organised to recognise the role of Malaysian journalists and media practitioners, besides serving as a platform for media practitioners to share opinions and enhance the development and growth of the media industry in Malaysia.
