Malaysia urged the government of Myanmar to take immediate action on the violence in the country by bringing the parties involved to justice.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said in a statement from the Asean-Malaysia National Secretariat, had also expressed concern on ongoing inter-communal violence issue that is happening in Myanmar.

He said the violence could affect neighboring countries, including Malaysia.

The statement was made during a bilateral meeting with Myanmar's Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin on the sideline of the 46th Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting (AMM) in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.

Meanwhile, Anifah is also seeking the Myanmar government’s approval to allow the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group to visit Myanmar and be given the fullest cooperation in fulfilling its mandate.

Religious violence erupted in western Rakhine last year, when hundreds of people were killed in clashes between Buddhist and Muslim population there.

This has caused about 140,000 people mainly Muslim minorities forced to leave their homes.
