Several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on Wednesday lodged police reports to call on the authorities to investigate local organisations for allegedly receiving funds from billionaire currency trader George Soros through his Open Society Foundation (OSF).

The Malaysian NGOs Coalition made a police report in the federal capital, while Pertubuhan Gerakan Penegak Suara Selangor (Gapenas) and Selangor Ex-Policemen's Association (PBPM) lodge their reports in Shah Alam.

Malaysian NGOs Coalition chairman Datuk Jamal Md Yunos said police should take action immediately as the funds contributed by OSF to Bersih, Merdeka Centre and news portal, Malaysiakini were aimed at toppling the government illegally.

"I hope the authorities including Bank Negara Malaysia would take firm action using existing laws to freeze all assets of Bersih leaders," he said after lodging the report at Dang Wangi police headquarters, here yesterday.

In another development, he said his organisation would be holding an assembly at Malaysiakini head office in Jalan Tandang, Petaling Jaya on Saturday.

In SHAH ALAM, Gapenas chairman, Nasiruddin Mohamed who spoke on behalf of Gapenas and PBPM said they made the police reports after reading DC Leaks on the matter, which was deemed 'dangerous' to national security.

"The exposure should be investigated and proven. If it was true there were individuals or foreign agents interfering into the Malaysian politics, they are indeed traitors who betrayed the country's sovereignty and independence," he told reporters after lodging the report at the Shah Alam police headquarters.

Nasiruddin said a comprehensive investigation should be carried out so that those involved were punished for threatening national security.

In a media report on Monday, DC Leaks revealed a foreign group chaired by Soros was reported to have financed several local organisations in its programme to maneuvere the coming general election. -- Bernama
