MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel has rubbished claims that he had given his blessings to a candidate contesting in the party elections next month.

"Blessings? No. I don't bless any person. Rubbish! How come I go and bless people or bless any division? Nobody blesses anybody," he said today.

He was commenting on claims that he had given his blessings to Wanita MIC deputy chief, Datin Dr C. V. Premakumari, over her intention to contest the post of Wanita chief.

Palanivel was also reported to have expressed confidence that Premakumari would shoulder the responsibilities which came with the numero uno position if the delegates gave her the mandate.

On the claims, the party president pointed out that Premakumari had sent him a short message service (SMS) and he merely replied to that.

"However, I neither gave my blessings nor approval. If there's a contest in women's election, let it be.

"I'm more concerned about my divisional meetings. Women are a different phenomena.

They might return unopposed, and all of this is not within our purview," he said at a press conference after opening the Sustainability and Environmental Management Conference and Exhibition 2013 here.

Earlier in his speech, Palanivel, who is also natural resources and environment minister, urged industry groups to take the initiative to seek ways of doing businesses and services which prevented pollution and reduced or mitigated the consumption of the limited natural resources.

He said self-regulatory efforts, via the application of the various voluntary standards for environmental management and sustainability should supplement enforcement activities.
