Police have detained a 16-year-old suspect believed to be involved in an armed robbery of a convenience shop at Jalan Tapah here Sunday afternoon.

In the 3.35pm incident, the suspect, who was believed to be armed with a knife, had attacked the 58-year-old shop owner but nothing was stolen from the shop.

Northeast police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said police had received a report from the owner’s son who happened to be at the store when the incident took place.

"Initial investigations revealed that the victim was attacked when he was at the counter alone.

"In a struggle that ensured, the victim suffered injuries on his left hand, left forearm and back of his head while the suspect also suffered from injuries as the public had tried to stop him as he attempted to flee," he said in a statement.

He said police had seized the knife used by the suspect and the case would be investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for armed robbery.
