KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating a state assemblyman (ADUN) from a state in the northern Peninsula on charges of outraging the modesty a shop assistant who is also a member of his party two weeks ago.

The opposition politician was alleged to have acted indecently when they went out shopping at a shopping complex in Subang and the complainant lodged a police report on March 16.

According to Subang Jaya District Police Chief, ACP Khalid Othman, the woman said in the police report that the politician invited her to meet up to discuss some political issues as the complainant is also a member of the party.

“The 31-year-old woman said that while walking around at about 8.40 pm on March 8, the suspect allegedly tried to hold her hand but was rebuffed by the complainant.

“Then, while the complainant was in the suspect’s car to go to an eatery, the suspect groped her, pulling the complainant’s shoulder and holding the complainant’s hand but was pushed away by her.

"Even though the suspect knew the complainant was not happy with the situation, the suspect still proceeded with it. The suspect also reminded the complainant not to tell anyone about the incident," said Khalid.

Khalid added that following the report received, the police had called the assemblyman to assist in the investigation.

The assemblyman was present to give a statement to the police on March 18.

The case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment for up to 10 years or a fine or whipping or any two such punishments.
