Two men were charged in the Sessions Court here for offering bribe amounting to RM7,150 to a senior officer of the Selangor Immigration Department three years ago.

The duo, Muhammad Razif Mahadi, 27, and Foo Ah Lee, 69, pleaded not guilty when a court interpreter read the charges to them separately before Judge Rozilah Salleh.

Muhammad Razif was accused of offering bribe of RM1,150 to Othman Montil as an inducement not to take action against two foreigners, while Foo was accused of offering bribe of RM6,000, also to Othman, as an inducement not to take action against six other foreigners, all of whom were suspected of committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Both men were alleged to have committed the offences at Batu 16, Rawang near here, between 11.20 am and 11.30 am on Feb 21, 2014.

They were charged under Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and if convicted, could be sentenced under Section 24 of the same Act, which carries a maximum jail terms of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Rozilah allowed bail of RM10,000 with one surety each for both accused and fixed May 26 for mention.

She also ordered them to report to the Selangor MACC office once a month.

MACC deputy public prosecutor Nor Diana Nor Azwa appeared for the prosecution while both the accused were unrepresented. - BERNAMA
