The Kelantan UMNO liaison will table a motion to protest the violence and atrocities against the ethnic Rohingya in Myanmar at the 2016 UMNO general assembly, its chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said today.

He said Kelantan UMNO would bring up the motion as the situation in Myanmar also impacted the state.

"Due to the unrestive situation in Myanmar, we get the spillover effect with thousands of Rohingya people entering Malaysia, including Kelantan," he told reporters after presenting the excellent student award to students in the Jeli parliamentary constituency who excelled in their 2016 Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) test.

Meanwhile in KUALA TERENGGANU, the State Communications and Multimedia and Special Functions Committee chairman Ghazali Taib today suggested Malaysia to lead the Islamic countries in calling for the Myanmar government to end its atrocities against the Rohingya people.

He said the time had come for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to use his influence to fight for the Rohingyas in Myanmar.

"We, the Muslims in Terengganu, regretted and are saddened by what is happening to our brothers and sisters," he told reporters after an event to dispose of the ashes of the Quran in the waters off Terengganu today.

Association of Women Development and Innovation Malaysia (Wadi) president Sukmamurni Abdul Manap, in a statement, wanted the UMNO General Assembly delegates to urge the government to sever diplomatic ties with Myanmar until demands that the atrocities be stopped are fulfilled.

In addition, Wadi also said a bigger and structured temporary placement should be built to accommodate the Rohingya refugees, especially women, children and disabled.

Meanwhile National Association of Tahfiz Al-Quran Institutions (Pinta) urged the government to do everything possible at ASEAN, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and United Nation levels to assist the oppressed Rohingya.

In a statement, it said the government should also assist organisations in Malaysia wishing to deliver aid to the Rohingya in Myanmar. -- Bernama
