National archer, Haziq Kamaruddin, 19, was crowned 2011 Johor Sportsman of the Year at the Johor state Sports awards ceremony held here yesterday.

The athlete who hails from Johor Baharu took home a cash award of RM5,000 and a trophy plus a incentive of RM5,000 from the Johor state government for qualifying on merit for the 2012 London Olympics.

There was no winner for the 2011 Johor Sportswoman of the Year after the selection committee found the sole candidate, Natasha Ezzra Abu Bakar from fencing, not a worthy candidate, based on her achievement and performance.

Kuala Lumpur Sukma best athlete winner Ahmad Syafiee Abdul Jabbar, who won three gold medals in canoeing at 14th Kuala Lumpur, received the 2011 Most Promising Sportsman of the Year award while fencer Filzah Syabila Jamaluddin won the 2011 Most Promising Sportswoman of the Year.

The awards were presented by Johor State Housing, Local Government, Works and Public Utilities Committee chairman, Datuk Ahmad Zahri Jamil who represented Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.
