The national junior hockey squad chalked up their first win by defeating Australia 3-2 in the Sultan of Johor Cup Hockey Tournament at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium here tonight.

The Singapore SEA Games gold medallists began aggressively in the first half and were rewarded with the first goal by last year's highest scorer in the tournament, Muhammad Shahril Saabah.

He converted a penalty corner in the 5th minute taken by Nik Mohd Aiman Nik Rozemi.

Australia, who were awarded seven penalty corners in the first half however failed to convert any of them and the scoreline at the end of the first half was Malaysia 1, Australia 0.

On resumption, the team under coach Arul Selvaraj added another goal via Norsyafiq Sumantri in the 38th minute.

Australia netted their first goal when Frazer Gerrard scored through a penalty corner in 43rd minute.

In the 56th minute, Malaysia went another goal up when Nor Azrul Abd Rahman converted a penalty corner taken by Muhd Najmi Farizal Jazlan.

The Australians under coach Ben Bishop refused to concede defeat and snatched a field goal by Max Hendry for Australia's second goal in the 63rd minute.

Earlier, India collected three points after edging Argentina 3-2 in their third match of the tournament.

India's three goals were contributed by Armaan Qureshi in the third minute, Gurjant Singh in the 10th minute and Nilakanta Sharma, in a penalty corner in the 48th minute.

Argentina's goals were scored by captain Maico Casella in the 39th minute and Nicolas Keenan in the 55th minute.

Meanwhile, Great Britain and Pakistan played to a goalless draw.

Tomorrow is a rest day and competition resumes on Friday.
