BAD enough that a luxury hotel in Dubai caught massive fire on New Year's eve, but to take a 'selfie' with the tragedy as a backdrop while smiling?

Netizens have dubbed the act, done by an unknown couple, as a new low.

The couple became the talk of the social media town when they decided to pose for a 'selfie' with the skyscraper blazing in the background.

The photo was uploaded to the Instagram account "ar_atiki", with the caption "Happy New Year Dubai, May God bless you and keep you safe, you always surprise us with the biggest fireworks".

The photo drew criticism from Instagram users who cite the action as "immature" and "inappropriate".

The image was later removed by the account owner after being urged by followers.

Just hours before midnight struck, a huge fire ripped through a luxury 63-storey hotel, the Address Downtown, which is a few blocks from the iconic Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, where people had gathered to ring in the New Year.

The fire had injured 16 people, according to media reports.
