Indonesian presidential candidate Joko Widodo or Jokowi has described the current political scenario in Indonesia, particularly in the run-up to the presidential geneal election this July 9 as "less refined".

The political leader from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), who was very concerned with the situation, said this practice was not good in the democratic system being practised in Indonesia.

"The politics (in Indonesia) is less refined. In this case, those involved are educated people," he said at a talkshow in Muhammadiyah Surakarta University, Central Jawa on Friday.

Jokowi said the situation was caused by the spread of news or negative issues in the mass media or social media.

"Attacks, defamations and pitting against one another have become the main agenda in the social media. The language (news) is rubbish.

"Democracy should be a happiness. Governor election is a happiness, presidential election is also a happiness," he said amidst applause from the audience.

The event at the university was part of Jokowi's political campaign in the northern coast of Jawa.
