KUALA LUMPUR: In the midst of escalating tensions in the South China Sea, the United States and the Philippines are once again demonstrating their enduring commitment to a robust naval alliance.

Earlier this week, they kicked off the annual "Samasama" naval war games, a clear message to China that their unity will not be shaken. "Samasama," is a Tagalog word meaning "Together," aptly encapsulates their determination to stand united against Beijing's aggressive territorial claims in the region.

These exercises, are more than just a routine display of military prowess by both nations. It is intended as a clear signal to Beijing, which has been flexing its muscles in the South China Sea and making bold claims over vast swathes of the region, despite an international ruling invalidating these claims way back in 2016.

With over a thousand sailors from both nations participating, these exercises will focus on anti-submarine, surface, and electronic warfare operations, effectively demonstrating their combined military might.

The Philippines has been witnessing the extent of China's posturing in recent weeks, with the deployment of patrol boats that intimidate the Philippines' coast guard and local fishermen.

A significant incident last month saw Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr order an operation to challenge China's blockade at the Scarborough Shoal, a move aimed at protecting the rights of Filipino fishermen.

In response, Vice Admiral Karl Thomas, in a thinly veiled reference to China, emphasized the need for a "rules-based international order" that has preserved peace for decades in the region. This not-so-subtle message underscores the challenge China poses to sovereignty and regional stability.

The U.S. Navy's involvement in the naval exercises is substantial, including the deployment of advanced assets such as the guided missile destroyer USS Dewey, a dry cargo ammunition ship, and the P-8 Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft.

As for the Philippines, it is contributing a guided missile frigate, and Japan's Maritime Self Defense Force and the Royal Canadian Navy are also taking part, showcasing a wide array of naval prowess.
A point to note that beyond the United States and the Philippines, other nations are also joining this united front.

Britain, Japan, Canada, France, and Australia are sending personnel for the tabletop exercises, with New Zealand and Indonesia serving as observers. This broad international cooperation sends a powerful message to China that its aggression is unacceptable.

In conclusion, the "Samasama" naval exercises are a testament to the strength of international cooperation and the shared commitment to preserving peace and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.
