A cafetaria assistant was charged in the Ampang magistrate's court here on Thursday, with abetment to encourage violence to threaten the public in Syria last year.

Muhammad Hilmi Hasim, 33, who was a worker of former Internal Security Act detainee Yazid Sufaat, 49, was charged with abetting Yazid to encourage violence to forward an ideology, viewed as aiming to threaten the public in Syria.

He was charged with committing the offence at No: DL11, Taman Bukit Ampang, Lorong Mutiara 2, Lembah Jaya, Ampang between 8.30am and 10.30am, between Aug 1 and Oct 20, last year.

He was charged under Section 130G (a) of the Penal Code (Act 574) for which the maximum sentence is 30 years jail and fine, if found guilty.

However, no guilty plea was recorded from the accused. Muhammad Hilmi was detained with his employer at the Courts Complex, Jalan Duta here on Feb 7, this year.

Magistrate Zulyana Zulkapli allowed the case to be transferred to the High Court.

The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Mohamad Hanafiah Zakaria, Ishak Mohd Yusoff and Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar while New Sin Yew appeared for the accused.
