The civil servant who was recorded on a closed-circuit camera (CCTV) assaulting his wife in the lift of a private hospital in Bukit Mertajam near here on Monday, has surrendered at the Kuantan police headquarters this evening.

State CID chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said the 36-year-old man had turned himself in at 4.45 pm.

"I was informed that the man wanted by the Penang police to facilitate the case of the CCTV recording which showed the assault, had surrendered at the Kuantan police headquarters.

"We will transfer him to Penang for a remand order," he said when contacted by Bernama here today.
He said the case was classified under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt and would be resolved in the near future.

The CCTV recording of the incident uploaded on Facebook and Youtube showed the suspect punching his wife, knocking her back against the lift. It also showed him kicking and slapping her and stomping on her glasses which had fallen down.

The couple's two children, aged four and five, were seen looking on throughout the two-minute ordeal.
