Police have vowed to bring the culprits over the death-in-custody case of N Dhamendran to book, and to carry out investigations in the most “fair and sincere” manner.

The Bukit Aman special task force, which was immediately ordered by the new Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar following the death, is now wrapping up investigations of the case.

In a statement today, Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (intelligence and operations) depty director Datuk Hadi Ho Abdullah said that several witnesses have been questioned and a few more statements will be recorded.

“Investigations will also seek to identify those responsible for the injuries sustained by the deceased,” said Hadi Ho.

The task force, he said, will hasten the completion of its investigation paper and will hand over their findings to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Hadi Ho also asked all parties not to speculate over the case or to politicise it.

Dhamendran, 32, an Indah Water employee was arrested on May 11. He had reportedly been detained to assist investigations into a case where two men were shot following an argument in Bandar Tun Razak.

On May 21, Dhamendran, who was held at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters, was pronounced dead at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. Police had initially said he complained of chest pains, and that Dhamendran had collapsed following “breathing difficulties” followed by a heart attack.

However, police later confirmed that there were criminal elements in the case and reclassified the case as murder following a post-mortem, which found bruises on the body. The cause of death was “multiple blunt force trauma”.

The high-level police task force apparently do not consist of any of the officers involved in the interrogation of Dhamendran.
