Most Malaysian students in Egypt are opting to celebrate Aidilfitri this year back home because of the uncertain situation there.

Universiti Alexandria third-year medical student Mohd Qarafi Mohd Ridhuan Tee, 22, said he chose to come home for the celebration because things were not stable there and wanted to be with his family during the occasion.

"Now, I am still sitting for some examination papers. Once done, I will immediately return to Malaysia to spend Aidilfitri with my family. The mood is not there in Egypt this time because of the conflicts taking place," he said when contacted by Bernama.

He said Malaysian students in Egypt had been advised to return home but the final decision lay with them.

Another Malaysian student, Mohd Bokhari Zainal, 22, a dental student at the same university, said Aidilfitri was not celebrated on a big scale in Egypt unlike Malaysia.

"Here, they focus more on the Ramadan month. Aidiladha is more popular," he told Bernama.

He added that most of the students this time had or would be returning home for Aidilfitri this time as advised by the Malaysian authorities because of the anarchy happening in Egypt following the overthrow of Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi by the military.
