The government would continue to strive at lightening the burden of the people through tighter enforcement of the Price Control Act, especially during the Ramadan and Syawal months, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The prime minister said this in his Facebook account on Friday where he also shared news from the National News Agency (Bernama) titled "Government implements various programmes to help people deal with rising cost of living - Muhyiddin" on his Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Dismissing accusations by the opposition that the government was not doing anything to help the people, Muhyiddin was reported to have said that the government had taken various measures to lessen the people's burden including enforcing the Price Control Act to protect the interests of consumers.

"Malaysia is the only country with a law to control the price of essential goods and food, especially during critical periods such as festivals," Muhyiddin said after officiating at the "Jom Bertani" programme in Kampung Nyior Tujuh, Jerteh, Terengganu, yesterday.

Meanwhile, on Malaysia's desire to secure global competitiveness, Najib said the government must also earnestly consider and implement measures to ensure the people's well-being to more accurately reflect the true well-being of the nation.

"Malaysia was ranked 56th out of 156 countries in the United Nation's World Happiness Index 2013.
"A nations sustainable progress in the global and competitive world of today must not be measured by GDP (Gross Domestic Product) performance alone," he said.

Najib said Malaysia's accelerated growth towards developed-nation rank must be in tandem with the status of the people's well-being.

"In the embodiment of the inclusive essence of 1Malaysia, we must collectively ensure all Malaysians are able to progress together in an equitable society," he said.
