The wedding reception of badminton's golden couple Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Wong Mew Choo was a smashing event.

About 1,500 guests attended the dinner reception which was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last night.

The event dubbed as the "wedding of the year' was attended by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Halim Mu'adzam Shah and the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Haminah Hamidun, ministers, foreign dignitaries as well as the couple's close family members and friends.

Among those present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said who was also present congratulated the couple on their wedding. Describing Lee as a champion and a sports hero, Ahmad said that he was at first surprised to hear the announcement of the wedding.

"He's a very busy man and it's amazing how well he kept the secret (of his intention to get married) before it was announced," he said.

Meanwhile, Shabery described the event as a spectacular event and the couple were well suited for each other.

"I hope the wedding lasts forever and may their children become great badminton players like them as well," he said.

He also hoped that the marriage would motivate Lee should he want to play for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Artistes Suki Low and Manbai entertained guests at the convention centre which was elegantly decorated with thousands of flowers.

Lee and Wong's attire were sponsored by DL Fashion at an estimated cost of RM850,000 which included bridal gowns, suits, wedding photos and videos.

The company had earlier said that some 120 dresses and suits will be sponsored for family members, groomsmen, bridesmaids and close friends of the bride and bridegroom, which cost RM400,000.
