MIC deputy president Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam today announced that he will contest for the number one post in the upcoming party polls.

He said the party is in dire need of a change, hence his candidacy.

"We need change. We need change. We need change.

"I don't have any desire for posts, I'm already a minister. What else do I need?

"So, I am announcing that I will contest for the number one post," he said when addressing close to 2,000 MIC branch leaders and party members at a special 'Current Issues and Future of MIC' meeting in Sentul here today.

His announcement was met with loud applause and enthusiastic cheers by party members who turned up in full force to support him.

At a press conference later, Subramaniam said change is much needed in the party especially before facing the next general election.

"If there is no change, we are afraid that the party will lose its strength and that will be a problem in the future," he said.

Meanwhile, Subramaniam's supporters were confident that he will be helming the party soon.

Former MIC Youth chief, T. Mohan, said Subramaniam is the best candidate for the job.

"We will support him. He is experienced and he will bring betterment to the party," he told Astro AWANI when met at the event.

MIC Wanita chief, Mohana Muniandy said Subramaniam's announcement was much awaited.

"We need a leader who puts party above self. We will go all out to support him and make sure he wins," she said.

Last Dec 5, the Registrar of Societies (RoS) had directed MIC to hold re-elections for three vice-president and 23 CWC posts within 90 days, following irregularities in the elections held in 2013.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had announced that the MIC would hold re-elections at all levels from April to July to resolve the crisis, and prevent it from being de-registered.

However, yesterday, MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel said legal action will be taken against the RoS should they refuse to retract their letters of order regarding the re-elections of MIC by next Monday.
