PAS has yet to discuss in detail with its partner Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) on the hudud issue, said its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Hadi said this was because its alliance with Ikatan had only just begun.

"The hudud issue is on penal matters and a judicial system for it must be in place first. That is why PAS welcomes the call by the Yang Di Pertuan Agong when delivering the Royal address for the Dewan Rakyat sitting earlier this month for the Syariah Courts to be elevated," he said when opening PAS's 65th anniversary celebrations at Dewan Kompleks PAS here today.

He was commenting on a report in a news portal which quoted Ikatan president Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir as saying that Malaysia is not ready for hudud laws which calls for harsh punishment against Muslims who committed crimes like adultery, sex out of wedlock and consuming alcohol.

PAS and Ikatan on Wednesday announced that they were forming an opposition pact to face the next general election.
