DATUK Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s press statement as UMNO President on the withdrawal of support for the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is more than just confusing.

It is senseless.

He also had allegedly said the government had failed to manage the COVID-19 pandemic effectively.

Has he forgotten that not only is UMNO part of the government but the relevant ministries managing the pandemic is headed by UMNO leaders.

Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, as the then-Senior Minister, Yang Berhormat Khairy Jamaluddin, the minister in charge of vaccination and Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba, the Minister of Health, are key ministers managing the COVID-19 challenges.

For Zahid to say that the government has failed in this regard, is to say that the UMNO ministers have ... failed.

It may also be construed as being insensitive and unfair to the ministers who have worked very hard in managing the current COVD-19 pandemic.

Could the Supreme Council have criticised their own party?

This is nonsensical and for this reason, many has questioned if Zahid was speaking for himself or on behalf of the party.

Tan Sri Annuar Musa, in his typical blunt manner, stated that there was no clear consensus made on the decision to withdraw support for the Prime Minister, as announced by Zahid. Under the circumstances, this appears to be the most reasonable inference.

Whatever the political motives may be, without a productive and clear way forward, such a statement undermining confidence in the current government will only create further uncertainties and instability.

It is not good for the country, on all fronts.

The rakyat, they do not need this now.
