Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said a special committee will be established to study the viability of Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) as a family theme park.

"The committee will consider making MAEPS a theme park for the people to enjoy their holidays and weekends with families," he told the media on the last day of Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro-tourism Exhibition (MAHA) 2016, here Sunday.

Closing MAHA 2016 today, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi suggested the MAHA site here be made a centre for the promotion of agro-tourism products.

The committee to be chaired by Zahid will involve the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Shabery wants MAEPS to be retained and is not willing to replace it with high rise housing projects.

"I only request for facilities such as monorail to connect nearby places in the vicinity of MAEPS. I will include this in the 'post-mortem'."

He said MAEPS will continue to be available to the people as it be developed as a recreation site.

"The people used to say that MAEPS is far from Kuala Lumpur but not anymore, since it is now accessible via the Maju Expressway." -- Bernama
