The police would conduct a detailed investigation on the gun and 30 live bullets found in a vehicle owned by Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) footballer, Safee Sali, yesterday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the probe would identify the actual owner of the pistol and bullets.

"Let us investigate first, it wasn't him (Safee) who was driving the vehicle at the time.

"Let's not make assumptions that footballers are keeping guns and such," he said after a cheque handover ceremony by DRB-Hicom Berhad to sponsor air-conditioning units for Maktab PDRM Cheras at Bukit Aman today.

Yesterday, during a road block near the Kempas exit of the North-South Expressway (north-bound) around noon, a team of traffic cops found a pistol and 30 live bullets in a yellow bag at the back seat of a red Ford Ranger vehicle owned by Safee.

The truck was being driven by a 34-year-old man.

The suspect was said to be the owner of an auto accessory shop that Safee had sent his vehicle to last week for some modifications.

It is understood that the JDT striker was supposed to take back his truck after the 2016 Malaysia FA Cup final match concluded last Saturday.

In the match, JDT won 2-1 against PKNS FC, and was crowned champions of the title.

Khalid said, the police have confirmed that the suspect had no connections with Safee, besides the latter being a client of his workshop.

"Let the police do their work. Whoever is responsible for the firearm and bullets will be brought to court," he said.

He added that the suspect is currently under remand.
