Terengganu police expects to receive a six fold increase of vehicles into the state during Aidilfitri festive season.

Its police chief, Datuk Rosli Ab Rahman said the increased volume would cause traffic congestion on several main routes such as the East Coast Expressway (LPT2), Jalan Jerangau-Jabor and other routes.

"In last year's 'Op Selamat', an average of 32,078 vehicles used the route during the 15-day period with the highest traffic volume recorded at 56,711 vehicles on July 15.

"As for the coastal route, a total of 144,350 vehicles were recorded during the corresponding period, followed by Jalan Jerangau-Jabor with 48,117 vehicles," he told Bernama here yesterday.

Rosli said traffic policemen would be stationed at highly congested areas to ensure a smooth traffic and the public could contact the nearest station to inform of traffic congestions in their areas.

"Normally, LPT2 would have more vehicles because it is a main route for people to return to Terengganu and Kelantan," he said, adding the public should plan their journey ahead and ensure their vehicles are in good condition to avoid any untoward incident.

A total of 578 police officers and men would be on duty throughout 'Op Selamat 9/2016' from June 29 to July 13, not just on the road but also in areas where crime cases were rampant.

"We do not want irresponsible quarters to take advantage by breaking into houses when people are away for Aidilfitri celebration," he said.
