Pas will grow fro strength to strength if President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang voluntarily steps back from defending the top post at the party’s 'muktamar' or general assembly in June.

Political analyst Professor Dr Ahmad Atory Hussain said, at the same time it will open the door for the party Deputy President Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man to replace the position with a structure and the party's next move to be executed smoothly.

"Abdul Hadi should relinquish his post voluntarily as it will strengthen the party with a younger leader. He provides a hint of unity after a little crack due to some problems lately,” said Atory.

He was commenting on the nomination of Ibrahim to challenge Abdul Hadi as Pas President at the party’s upcoming general assembly in June.

The nominations announcement was made by Pas division chief Datuk Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Abdullah during a special meeting on Monday.

According to Wan Abdul Rahim, the nomination of Tuan Ibrahim to replace Abdul Hadi was made after the Pas president's health was said to be deteriorating and based on Tuan Ibrahim leadership and experience.

Atory explained that if Abdul Hadi does not relinquish his post, Tuan Ibrahim’s dominance in taking over the party in the future will continue.

"Put Tuan Ibrahim as the party’s number two, when the time comes he will eventually be president," he says.

Meanwhile, Universiti Sains Malaysia School of Social Science's Deputy Dean Associate Professor Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said the nomination is considered too early to make any conclusions.

"Although it is the first nomination in 15 years against Abdul Hadi, it is still early, and it came from Kelantan, which is Tuan Ibrahim’s territory.

"Tuan Ibrahim had to withdraw from the elections for the deputy president post during Nasruddin’s time and lost to Mat Sabu.

“I think Tuan Ibrahim will examine all possibilities before making a decision and the presidency will remain a status quo eventually," he explained.
