UMNO can change its decision in sacking Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in 2016 and accept him back into the party, said the party's deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

In an interview with the Malaysia Post portal, Mohamad said UMNO could change its decision if Muhyiddin intends to return to the biggest Malay party.

According to Mohamad, if the prime minister does so, it will make a lot of things easier including the distribution of election seats later.

"If he has a desire to return to the party, we can change the decision to sack him. We would welcome if Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) wants to return to UMNO, it is better that way.”

“He will be the Prime Minister who is supported by a big party and has many MPs, so it will be simpler and easier.

"Facing the General Election (GE) also will be no problem, for example in terms of seat distribution," he said.

On 24 June 2016, the UMNO Supreme Council (MT) decided to sack Muhyiddin who was then the party's deputy president with immediate effect.

The then UMNO president, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak was reported to have said that the action was unanimously agreed by the UMNO MT due to disciplinary violations, specifically for being on stage with the opposition attacking the leadership and the party.

Meanwhile, Mohamad, who is also Rantau state assemblyman, also said that Muhyiddin is an eligible GE15 prime ministerial candidate due to the acceptance of the people during his tenure for the post.

Mohamad added he personally has no problem with Muhyiddin's candidacy.

"Why not we take the opportunity to nominate him as the prime ministerial candidate for the Muafakat Nasional (MN) or the Perikatan Nasional (PN), there is no issue.

"The important thing is that we get a comfortable victory," he said.
