Niaga SPOTLIGHT: Precious Metals & the Semiconductor Race

The global AI boom is driving unprecedented demand for advanced chips, power semiconductors and high-performance packaging technologies. Behind that race is another critical industry: precious metals.

Malaysia already accounts for around 13% of global semiconductor testing and packaging activity, while the government’s National Semiconductor Strategy aims to channel RM25 billion into strengthening the sector. But as supply chains fragment and demand for AI hardware surges, questions around raw materials, urban mining, e-waste recycling and sustainable manufacturing are becoming impossible to ignore.

Tehmina Kaoosji speaks to Yasutaka Ihara, Director at TANAKA, on Malaysia’s semiconductor ambitions, advanced packaging, and why precious metals may become one of the most strategic components in the future global tech economy.
