Tourism Malaysia aims to secure RM5 million in sales for its domestic packages at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair next month.

Domestic Promotion Division director Iskandar Mirza Mohd Yusof said it sold RM5.5 million worth of domestic packages at last September's edition.

"We are targeting lower sales this year as there will be only 90 tourism operators taking part under our umbrella compared with 110 last year.

"Our concept for this year is 'nature' and we will occupy 60 booths," he told a press conference on the upcoming MATTA Fair here today.

Meanwhile, MATTA CEO Phua Tai Neng said the event is expected to generate more than RM200 million in total sales in the domestic, regional and international segments.

"At last March's edition, we secured around RM200 million in total sales and we are expecting no less for the September event," he said.

Phua said last year, the number of domestic travellers increased by 4.5 percent while their expenditure expanded 9.2 percent compared with 2014.

"The MATTA Fair next month will continue to contribute and support the growth of domestic and inbound tourism in our country," he said.

Phua said 382 organisations, travel agents and hospitality operators including from Japan, South Korea and Indonesia have confirmed their participation at the three-day event.

The biannual fair is scheduled for Sept 2-4 at the Putra World Trade Centre here.
